Red Dungarees, the colour that gets noticed ❤️
At La Salopette®, red dungarees are for anyone who has had enough of blue and black. From deep burgundy to bright red, this selection covers nine models cut from fabrics of 280 to 320 GSM, in corduroy, denim or cotton, available up to 8XL. Red is not a colour you wear half-heartedly, so it may as well come in a fabric that lasts.
One thing straight away: this is not certified hi-vis workwear. No reflective tape, no fluorescent panels.
Burgundy, brick, pillar-box red: three families 🎨
Behind the word red sit three shades that behave nothing alike. Burgundy leans purple and black: matte, it hides marks well, and it is the only one of the three that survives a meeting. Brick, or madder, leans orange and earthy. From ten metres the eye reads a warm colour, not a signal. Pillar-box red negotiates nothing.
Do not trust screens. A matte burgundy looks almost brown on a phone under warm light, and distinctly purple on a cold display. Corduroy gives back two reds depending on which way the pile runs: lighter across the thighs, deeper on the bib.
Three ways to wear red 🧵
The Corduroy Burgundy plays the matte, warm burgundy card, ideal from September to March, and is one of our models with fast dispatch. The Denim Rouge Cardinal takes a brighter red on a denim base, to wear with off-white or raw indigo. The Rouge Garance Shorts shortens the silhouette for warmer days. Red is the pigment that goes first ☀️
Treated the same way, a red holds up worse than a blue or a black. Red dyes cope less well with UV and rinse out faster in the first few washes. That is dye chemistry, nothing more.

The first three washes. On their own, or at the very least with darks. The white tee from the same drum comes out pink.

Sunlight, more than the machine. A day on a south-facing line costs more colour than a month of washes at 30 °C.

Whitening detergents. Optical brighteners leave red looking dull. Use a colour detergent, normal dose.

The tumble dryer. Heat bakes the colour out. That one is a flat no.
Vinegar does not fix the dye on cotton that has already been dyed, however often you read it. On red denim, part of the colour loss is not wear at all but fading at the rub points: knees, pocket bags, the bottom edge of the bib. The rest of the routine sits in our care guide.
What to wear it with 👖
Red stands on its own: a white tee, a pair of light trainers, and you are done. For a sharper contrast, an ecru knit or a fine-striped shirt works very well. Looking for a neighbouring, softer tone? Have a look at our brown dungarees, which share the same warmth without the same brightness.
It goes wrong when the rest of the outfit wants to shout too. One loud piece, everything else turned down. Bright red plus strong green: Christmas. Red plus red-and-white stripes: fancy dress, and rarely on purpose. Burgundy takes black without blinking, bright red much less so. If you would rather keep red as an accent, the easiest base in the catalogue is still our black dungarees.
When red works in your favour 🚧
In daylight red lifts off almost everything, from the green of an allotment to the grey of a workshop. The caveat arrives at dusk. In low light the eye loses reds first while blues still carry: excellent at 2 pm, mediocre at 9 pm. On the road or after dark you want a certified hi-vis vest over the top, because colour is not a standard. For the workshop or the garden in daylight, look at our work dungarees: the reinforcements and pockets are cut for it.
Getting the size right 📏
The classic mistake is starting from your top size. Dungarees are chosen on your trouser size. The straps take up 5 to 8 cm. Set correctly, you can slide two flat fingers between strap and shoulder. Tighter than that and the bib digs in. Between two sizes, take the bigger one.
We cut from XS to 8XL. Our size guide has a calculator: height, weight, and it tells you which size to order. Past XL, our plus size dungarees are cut for it, not simply scaled up.
Delivery, exchange and care 🚚
Part of this collection sits in our warehouse in Miramas, in the south of France: that is Express Delivery, dispatched in 3 to 6 working days within France. We pack those parcels ourselves. If the size is wrong, the exchange is possible within 14 days.
You can cancel your order within 24 hours of purchase, or send your dungarees back within 14 days of delivery if the size is not right.
Care fits on one line: 30 °C inside out, colour detergent, no tumble dryer, dry in the shade. Shrinkage stays under 2 %. At 60 °C with a whitening powder, that same red is salmon pink before summer.
