Three layers, and sweat is what decides 🌡️

Cold is not the real problem when you ski. Sweat is. You sit still in the lift for eight minutes, you ride down working your thighs, and your body changes gear twice an hour. Hence the three layers: a base layer that moves moisture out, synthetic or merino, a mid layer that insulates, an outer layer that stops wind and snow. The dungarees are the outer layer. Cotton against the skin is mistake number one: it soaks, it holds the damp, and it chills you the moment you stop.

Waterproof ratings: the numbers worth reading 💧

Waterproofing is measured in millimetres of water column. The markers: 5,000 mm handles a piste day in dry cold, 10,000 mm takes wet snow and soaked chairlifts, 20,000 mm covers off-piste and proper rain. Below 3,000 mm you spend the day watching the sky.

Almost nobody reads the second number: breathability, in grams per square metre per 24 hours. 5,000 g is enough for relaxed skiing, 15,000 g starts to matter as soon as you walk or carry your skis. A very sealed, poorly breathing fabric soaks you from the inside, and then the weather gets the blame. Seams cancel out everything else: 20,000 mm with badly taped seams lets water through the seat on the first sitting turn.

The lower leg, where the edges bite 🎿

Look at a second-hand pair of ski dungarees: the seat is almost never the part that died, the inside of the ankles is. Steel edges are sharpened like blades, you cross your skis two or three times a day, and the fabric shreds over the last twenty centimetres. A reinforcement here means a band of denser fabric stitched inside the leg opening. You will not spot it in a lifestyle photo. It decides how long the garment lasts.

Second wear point: the snow gaiter, the inner elastic that seals above the boot. Without it, your first flat crash fills your socks. On the white Rehall ski dungarees, look at the close-up shots of the leg opening before you order.

Pockets you can open wearing gloves 🧤

A test to run at home, long before the snow: put your ski gloves on and try to open every pocket. Plenty of people find the problem at the top of the lift, with the pass in a pocket they can no longer reach.

What works: wide pulls with a cord loop, never an 8 mm metal tab. A thigh pocket rather than a low side pocket, because on a chairlift the low one ends up under your hip. Keep the phone on the bib: warm against your chest, the battery lasts far longer than at minus 8 in a leg pocket.

Your size, and the bib that rides up when you raise your arms 📏

There is one move nobody makes in the fitting room that settles the question in three seconds: raise both arms above your head. If the crotch rides up and cuts in, the dungarees are short in the body, not tight in the waist. Going up a size fixes nothing, you gain width and keep the problem. The straps fix it, 5 to 8 cm of adjustment on our cuts.

The marker, standing with your arms down: two fingers between strap and shoulder. Tighter and it pulls the first time you plant a pole. Looser and the bib gapes and catches wind. The classic mistake is still starting from your top size instead of your trouser size. A word on care, because ski kit is usually washed badly: 30 °C inside out, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer. Softener coats the fabric and kills the very breathability you paid for. Shrinkage stays under 2% as long as the temperature stays down.
